Cooling Agent WS-3: The Backbone of Layered Cooling Systems

WS-3 holds the title of the most widely used cooling agent on the market, yet its real strength lies in how it teams up with other grades. Because WS-3 is virtually non-volatile, odorless and tasteless, it lays down a clean, long cooling base without adding its own note. Consequently, formulators build layered cooling curves by pairing it with faster or stronger siblings. This post explains why WS-3 anchors a cooling system, where its long tail earns its place, and how to layer and pair it for a custom profile.

Why WS-3 anchors a cooling system

WS-3 (N-Ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide, CAS 39711-79-0, FEMA 3455) is a menthol derivative that behaves nothing like menthol. First, it is virtually non-volatile, so it does not flash off during processing or on the shelf. Next, its cooling concentrates on the roof and back of the mouth and the back of the tongue, leaving the front clear for other agents. In addition, with purity at ≥99% (HPLC) and a recommended dosage of 30–100 mg/kg, it scales predictably from a whisper to a strong cool. Most importantly, because it is odorless and tasteless, WS-3 sets the baseline that faster or more intense grades can build on.

Where the long tail earns its place

The 15–30 minute cooling window pays off in products that stay in the mouth or on the skin. For example, chewing gum and confectionery keep a cool that survives minutes of chewing. Meanwhile, beverages, beer and spirits carry a refreshing finish that outlasts the sip. Furthermore, toothpaste, oral care and OTC liniments gain a sustained, non-burning cool that peppermint cannot match. Beyond these, skin creams, shampoos and air fresheners use the same long tail for a lasting fresh feel. In every case, WS-3 supplies the endurance the format demands.

How to layer and pair WS-3

Start by pre-dissolving WS-3 in ethanol or propylene glycol, then add it to the water phase or flavor system before dosing. Because it is only slightly water soluble (<0.1%), this pre-dissolve step keeps the base even. Next, layer WS-3 with WS-23 for burst-plus-endurance, or with WS-5 when you need extra strength on top of the long tail. As a result, you shape both the attack and the decay of the cooling curve. Therefore, blend WS-3 with dementholized peppermint oil to lift the fragrance signature, request a sample and COA to tune the dose, and review our applications guide for starting points by category.
