WS-23 vs WS-3: Choosing the Right Cooling Agent

Two of the most popular cooling agents compared: onset speed, duration, aroma and best-fit applications for WS-23 and WS-3.
WS-3 and WS-23 are the two most requested cooling agents in the WS series – and choosing between them shapes the entire sensory profile of your product.
WS-3 (N-ethyl-p-menthane-3-carboxamide, CAS 39711-79-0) is the all-rounder: clean cooling concentrated in the mouth, building over a few seconds and lasting 15-30 minutes. It is the default choice for confectionery, beverages, oral care and anywhere a long, comfortable cool matters.
WS-23 (N,2,3-trimethyl-2-isopropylbutyramide, CAS 51115-67-4) is the burst specialist: cooling that hits almost instantly and fades cleanly. It is chemically unrelated to menthol, completely odorless, and has become the most popular grade in e-liquids and fast-consumption formats.
Rule of thumb: choose WS-3 for duration, WS-23 for impact, or blend them – a WS-23/WS-5 premix delivers an instant hit with a long tail. Our team designs such blends as custom OEM premixes with batch COA.
