The cooling curve: onset, peak and fade
❄ WS · NEWS

Why cooling agents differ: TRPM8 activation, onset speed, peak intensity and fade – and how to blend grades to engineer a curve.

Not all cooling is the same. Cooling agents work by activating TRPM8 receptors – the same cold sensors menthol triggers – but each molecule’s solubility, volatility and metabolism give it a distinct temporal signature: how fast the cool arrives (onset), how strong it gets (peak) and how slowly it disappears (fade).

WS-23 peaks fast and fades fast. WS-5 builds a smooth wave lasting up to 30 minutes. WS-12 concentrates sensation in the throat. WS-1 and WS-7 deliver gentle, skin-friendly comfort. Understanding these curves lets a formulator compose cooling the way a perfumer composes fragrance – top notes, heart and base.

The practical tool is blending: a WS-23/WS-5 combination gives instant impact with a long tail; WS-3 with dementholized mint oil adds an aromatic layer beneath the physical cool. Baisifu’s technical team engineers such curves daily as custom premixes – send us your target sensation.
